Pool Party and Pig Pickin' — June 19th

Village Green is having a pool party and pig-pickin' on this coming Saturday, June 19th. Everyone is invited and can come to the pool anytime. The pig is estimated to be ready around 3:00 PM.

The pig is being donated and will be prepared by our famous NC Barbecue chef Kenny Wiggins. If you do not eat pork, feel free to bring something you want to cook on the grill. Everyone is encouraged to bring side dishes for the party. All paperware, plastic ware, and drinks will be provided by the Association.

Community Watch

On June 6, 2009, Village Green held its 2nd annual community watch meeting in conjunction with our pool-opening party. Carolyn Davis (Randolph) and Jane Alcon (Lexington) coordinated the food, plus planned the community watch activities. Our thanks to Carolyn and Jane!

Neighborhood Improvement Program

The finished look - May 2, 2009! Saturday, May 2, 2009, marked another successful volunteer day for Village Green. This time, we installed numbered address plaques for each unit. As in previous projects (landscaping, new outdoor lighting), the plaques were funded under Cary’s Neighborhood Improvement Program (NIP), in support of Village Green's Community Watch Initiative.

The winning design of the plaques was selected by the homeowners back in February. The "winner" was subsequently manufactured by Rodney's Custom Cut Design Company in Holly Springs NC.

A week before the installation, coordinator Norm Rose (Kensington) rigged up "jigs" attached to a template to standardize the installation procedure. The jig slipped around the base of the lanterns, then the location of the drill holes were marked from the template. After drilling, the brick "dust" from the drilling was blown out with turkey basters (!), sealant and screws were inserted, then the sign was fitted onto the screws. Norm and Mickey Weeks (Lexington) spent 2 days doing some testing/prep work before the volunteer day arrived.

The official installation began at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 2. Fifty-five volunteers showed up, bringing drills, cords, screw drivers and, yes, turkey basters! Teams fanned out for the installation which we completed around 11, just in time to enjoy pizza and sodas in the clubhouse.

For Anyone in Need

A community service that you should know about ...
The Dorcas Shop is more than a thrift store. Its real purpose is to help those who are in financial need or who face other immediate crises. The staff at its community outreach center are caring and knowledgeable. They know how to help and have some financial resources to follow through on that help. Some of the services offered include:
  • Paying a utility bill, buying gasoline, helping with rent or mortgage, giving clothing, paying for prescriptions, providing food, giving comfort and a listening ear
  • Awarding scholarships for adults seeking to improve their education
  • Awarding scholarship assistance to children including preschool, before and after school, and daycare schools
  • Operating a food pantry which offers bags of groceries to feed people for at least one week
  • Recycling some Dorcas Thrift Shop donations to others in need.
Regardless of your personal beliefs, if you have a need, big or small, please remember that these wonderful people are there for you.
